A winters day, braving Stockport for more seasonal shopping, we took refuge with two friends in the best pub in Stockport Centre, The Arden Arms. In a fortnight a group of us will enjoy our oldies Christmas lunch as is now our custom. I think it’s 12 years since Joe & Steve transformed this gem of a pub into Stockport’s best answer to a Gastro Pub but at the same time never losing sight of the fact that it is still a good pub to drink in.
The pub is listed as a CAMRA heritage pub which means the original interior is preserved intact. It has been tastefully added to by the current licensees. Joe’s experience as the proprietor of the famous That Cafe in Levenshulme is used to good effect with the excellent lunchtime menu . Sandwiches both and hot and cold are augmented by a short but perfectly formed list of specials which change on a daily basis. This particular day three of us enjoyed salmon in a tarragon cream sauce served with crushed new potatoes and samphire, the odd girl out spoke well of the goats cheese salad. Nothing ever exceeds £10 currently and there is always a vegetarian option.
The only exception to the lunchtime rule is during December where in addition to the usual menu , the Arden puts on a great Christmas Lunch of three courses. It never disappoints.
