Here we are again , on the cusp of another year: 2011. It doesn’t have quite the ring to it that other years have had, but it is all a blank page just now. Lets see how it looks from the other end.
At this time of the year , the media seem full of lists and summaries and the temptation is to replicate one of those just now. I would probably embark on some rant about current spoken English which would “out” me as a prescriptive, traditionalist , archetypal Grumpy Old Man. ” Go on ! ” I hear you say, ” You know you want to”
OK, OK… I will then, but I will spare my usual victims. So “kinda” , “like”, the misuses of “get” are off the hook , as it’s Christmas. Also temporarily pardoned are “journey”, “being inspired”, “taking on board” and “moving forward”. The text speak that has begun to infect the spoken word such as “OMG” and “LOL” can also pass by unmolested, well , just for today.
I am not even going to refudiate ( as Sarah Palin would say ) the opportunities of those who like to confuse “specific” with the largest body of water on Earth.
No, all my scorn is reserved today for the most annoying verbal tic of 2010. The use of the phrase “Do you know what “. This phrase has been annexed this year by millions in all walks of life but especially the media. Everyone uses it but it has become a quiet monster. Listen out for it – it is now THE emphasis phrase….and must never be used as a question because the user does not want to hear what you know.
Have a great 2011, because at the end of the day, the bottom line is..I’m having Gazpacho!
