New York, just like I pictured it…..

……skyscrapers and everything! A new city , one of the world’s greatest, if not the greatest. I am not new to the USA, having previously visited Florida, New England and San Francisco, but I still remember my first time in 1991. Everything was so familiar and so exciting at the same time. I went to a 7-11 buying donuts ( sic ) and baseball cards, learned that the car is king as it took me 10 minutes to cross a road on foot. What was so mundane to the locals was full of cultural references for me from a lifetime of exposure to American media through television, film and books.

So, as you read this, we will be on our way. Our United Airlines 757 landing at Newark, New Jersey at 12.30 local time. What will be our first impressions? We have 4 days and one of those is pretty much spoken for in terms of what is planned, this leaves us possibly three days to do what we can. Everyone who has ever been has a piece of advice of where to go. At the same time , we know fromĀ  experience that to try to do it all is to fail and, indeed, miss the point. There has to be time to just let it flow over you and try to just experience the city as it is.

I will sketch out what we plan to do over the next four days and then write up the reality on our return. Have a nice day!

Ok but don’t miss MOMA and Lindy’s Cheesecake. The Russian Tea Room’s always worth a visit and Ground Zero monument supposedly very impressive and calming place. ENJOY!
